Process Development to Create Plastic Foam from Marine Algae

In a cooperative effort with the Institute for Process and Particle Engineering at the Graz Institute of Technology, it has been possible to develop a process for creating plastic foam from marine algae up to pilot scale.
Immense raw material resources in the form of rapidly growing brown algae, which can be found in the seas all over the world, plus an environmentally neutral foaming medium – air – and water as the reaction medium are the cornerstones of this process. The potential uses for this pioneering technology lie in the packaging sector and for insulation material in the construction industry, with other suitable prospects in various areas of technology.

Tests show that Alginsulat plastic foam also has natural flame-retardant properties.
